The painting was done as a memorial for Frank Thomas. It shows the ocean in Virginia Beach, Va. Years ago he told me about a vision that he had of a past-life in France in which he saw horses coming in as the surf. It reminded me of the artist and book illustrator, Walter Crane's (15 August 1845 – 14 March 1915) Neptune's Horses (oil on canvas), 1892, now in the Neue Pinakothek (New Pinakothek), an art museum in Munich, Germany.
I started with red gesso, experimenting to see if it would give richer color. The top of the painting is from a photo. I used a grid method to transfer the image more accurately.
